{"id":96751,"date":"2026-05-12T11:51:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T11:51:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/datelineafro.com\/?p=96751"},"modified":"2026-05-12T11:51:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T11:51:11","slug":"lagos-to-launch-state-issued-drivers-licence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/datelineafro.com\/?p=96751","title":{"rendered":"Lagos to Launch State-Issued Driver\u2019s Licence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a state-issued driver\u2019s licence in partnership with the Federal Government as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen road safety, improve traffic regulation, and ease licensing procedures for motorists across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this on Monday during the 2025 ministerial press briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osiyemi explained that when the initiative becomes operational, motorists would have the option of obtaining either the existing federal driver\u2019s licence or the newly proposed Lagos State-issued licence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to him, the initiative is aimed at enhancing compliance with traffic laws, improving safety standards on Lagos roads, and streamlining the process of obtaining and renewing driver\u2019s licences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that the new arrangement is also expected to reduce the delays frequently experienced under the current licensing system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Providing updates on licensing activities across the state, the commissioner revealed that a total of 56,876 driver\u2019s licences were processed within the review period. The figure comprises 27,067 fresh applications and 29,810 renewals handled in collaboration with the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency and the Federal Road Safety Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further disclosed that 1,158 international driver\u2019s permits were issued during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking on rail transportation developments, Osiyemi stated that Phase One of the Lagos Blue Line Rail transported approximately 3.5 million passengers in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that the second phase of the Blue Line extension, spanning Mile 2 to Okokomaiko, is expected to be completed and fully operational by the first quarter of 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Lagos Red Line Rail, the commissioner disclosed that the state government had acquired 24 additional train coaches, arranged into three sets of eight-coach trains, to improve passenger operations along the corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Osiyemi also revealed that work had intensified on the proposed 68-kilometre Lagos Green Line Rail project, which is expected to connect Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone through Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, and Sangotedo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce a state-issued driver\u2019s licence in partnership with the Federal Government as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen road safety, improve traffic regulation, and ease licensing procedures for motorists across the state.
